In some days time our U20 team will be participating in the FIFA U20 World Cup and so much is expected of this team especially after their stellar showing at the AYC U20 where they won the championship in Senegal and also.
But I am not writing to analyse their chances of winning the trophy but looking after the tournament or perhaps 5 to 10 years time if this players can actually make the step up to the National team
It is true that this set of U20 players are.very talented with players like Iheanacho, Chidera Ezeh, Taiwo Awoniyi and Dele Alampasu just to mention a few are some of the talented players in the team some others like Iheanacho have already signed for English Giants Man City.
After this tournament what happens to this players do they wilt away like players like Solomon Okoronkwo, Macauley Chrisantus, Chinedu Obasi who had good U20 tournaments and didn’t use the tournaments as a stepping stone but rather they regressed further in their careers.
I believe our target should not be to win this tournament but ensure our players are mentally& physically ready to make the career step up and one day be the one donning the green white green jersey with pride and turn their potential to real talent good enough to play in the biggest clubs
